Course Details
I often wonder about the creative process of artists and designers - what inspired them and how their imagination and gifts brought so much beauty into the world.
In this class, we will look to our favorite artists, fashion illustrators, vintage fashion designers, along with our own work to fuel our imaginations. We will create color studies, abstract explorations, figurative work, and a lovely portrait too! This class is all about creating from what you love and allowing yourself to play. It's about capturing the beauty you see and incorporating it into your art!
I hope you will join me!

Renée

The Lessons
Lesson 1 | Collecting Inspiration
When you take your time to gather together images, words, textiles, books, and your own sketches, it begins to open the door to your imagination. By creating an inspiration wall of all the things that inspire, you will find that it sets the tone and will reveal so much about what you find beautiful.
I encourage you not to skip this step, to light a candle and put on music that moves your soul, and spend time with this lesson. Look at fashion books, art books, vintage papers, old photos, anything that you find beautiful. Add your favorite paint color on pieces of vintage paper, splash ink onto an old letter, dip your paintbrush into your favorite color of paint and then make mindful marks across the page. Be very conscious of what makes your heart race. Throughout this class, keep referring to your inspiration wall (or door, or real pinboard) I promise, it will reveal so much to you
LESSON 2 - COLOR STUDIES
In this lesson, we will create four small color studies to use throughout the course. I believe, that when you spend time with your art supplies, you begin to develop a relationship with them. Experimenting with color, marks, and textures takes away the pressure of creating art. You begin to immerse yourself in creating and find the freedom to explore.
Lesson 3 | Fashion Sketches
In this lesson, we will create three "fashion-inspired" sketches. I will share how I create a simple figure in a dress. We will bring the drawing to life with gouache, acrylic paints, and pastels working with our color studies from Lesson 2.
Lesson 4 | Vintage Inspired Portrait
Inspired by a vintage photograph of a woman, I will guide you step by step as we develop charcoal drawing on toned paper. We will then add layers of pastel pencil and soft pastel to create a luminous, contemporary portrait. The emphasis of this lesson is for you to capture the beauty of how you see this woman.
Lesson 5 | Abstract On Paper
In this intuitive painting lesson, we will start with one of our color studies to establish our color palette. We will combine bits of collage papers, mark-making, and texture as we build layer upon layer of color. I will encourage you to honor anything that may be meandering through your mind as you capture beauty as only you can.
I will guide you layer by layer as we work big to free our imaginations and capture the beauty of just creating.
Bonus Lesson | Woman In A Dress
In this lesson, we take one of our fashion sketches as inspiration. We look to the work we did in our color studies and abstract painting to create a dress filled with beautiful colors, mark-making, and texture
