The Summer Sketchbook Challenge

It is officially Summer!

Adventure awaits!

Where will your footsteps take you?

What sights will you behold?

Whose company will you enjoy?

What thrilling experiences will you encounter this Summer?

Your summer sketchbook can document everything you see, feel, and experience. Don't let a moment of this beautiful Season pass you by!

How to Begin!

Supplies & Links

I prefer a small sketchbook that I can tuck inside my bag - like this little moleskine watercolor sketchbook.

Peel & Sketch Charcoal Pencil

Micron Pen,

Blackwing pencil

A couple Neo Color water-soluble crayons

Waterbrush

Travel watercolor set

Glue Stick.

Now, how about a few ideas to get you started?

  1. Go to the Farmer's Market and pick out beautiful fruit or vegetables. Take them home to paint or sketch.

  2. Visiting the lake or beach? Capture the landscape in watercolor. I like to tape the edges of my page which creates a lovely clean edge to your landscape.

  3. Don’t forget to do a little beachcombing for shells, driftwood, or seaglass.

  4. Visit the botanical gardens and sketch flowers.

  5. Take a hike and observe the light, texture, and landscape. Sketch trees, wildflowers, leaves, branches, the trail, insects, or anything that grabs your attention.

  6. Take a garden tour in your neighborhood.

  7. Look for patterns and colors on your outings. Document them and create an album on your phone for future reference.

  8. Bake a Peach Pie and sketch your ingredients.

  9. Go to your local cafe, sit, and sketch. If this makes you nervous, start by writing out your observations.

  10. Press flowers, add tickets, and other bits and pieces from your excursions into your sketchbook. The more texture you add, the better.

These are a few ideas to help you begin. Remember, don't pressure yourself to create a masterpiece in your sketchbook. You're collecting ideas, experiences, images, and ideas - quick and messy sketches are the perfect way to capture your Summer adventures.
